The Spin-out Story
In 2003 I attended my first rave: "Godspeed, The Red Dragon." From this day until today I have been captured by the underground dance music scene and styles of music such as hardstyle, hard-trance, happy/hardcore and similar styles of music which I had never been exposed to. Having listened to a wide variety of music including Rock. Hip-Hop/Rap and commercial dance such as Wild and Skitzmix, my music has always been widely influenced. Playing guitar and drums as a teenager I developed a thirst for not just listening to music but making my own for others to enjoy. My HSC year saw my first effort at production. "Eternal Groove," was the title of my composition major work, a commercial dance song featuring the vocal talents of class mate Julia London. The project scored in the high nineties and was the beginning of a life-long passion for dance music.
The track, Eternal Groove, was a far-cry from the harder styles I play today; however at the time of this track's production I didn't even know what a rave was. Godspeed changed my perception of music forever, developing my taste towards hard trance and happy hard. Eventually I was consumed by the rave and club scenes of Sydney which showcased the talents of Nik Fish, Amber Savage, Pee Wee and many more including international artists such as Scott Brown and LAB 4 who have influenced my style to date. The weekend could never come quick enough and by the end of the year I had attended almost every rave event, and various club nights including Sublime, Icebox and Sounds on Sunday.
The event that changed my life as it is today was Utopia NYE 2004; not the performers or the people that I met, but the recovery party the next day. Lazing about at some swimming pool in Terry Hills, a friend of mine, Ingrid invited me to our mate Craig's place for a "mix." I remember looking at Ingrid, confused- "what's a mix?" Upon arriving at Craig's house we proceeded to take turns on the turntables, which until then I had only seen in black and white movies! I was instantly addicted and started meeting up with craig any chance I could just to have a turn on the "decks." I even began purchasing vinyl without any equipment of my own to play them on! The first tracks I bought were: Walt & Feliz- "Expansion," and Scott Brown- "Definition of a Bad Boy," both of which I still have today. It was during this time that I discovered my desire to play in front of huge crowds and entertain the masses.
I continued to buy records and mix at Craig's until April of 2004 when I bought two Technics 1210MK2's and a Behringer mixer and headphones. It was at this point in time that I turned into a hermit for a brief period. Refining my technique, whilst still being inspired by the talent of the local scene I got my first chance to rock the crowd at the first installment of Playground at the Metro Theatre in the city. I played back to back with long time mixing mate, Craigy-B, under the name of Burnsy. Playing at various DJ Competitions and small scale parties I developed my style of multi-layered mixes, highlighted with clever tricks, cuts and scratches. I still had much to learn.
Upon meeting my girlfriend at the time and still today, Sarah, I had a constant source of inspiration and my skills on the wheels of steel excelled. I was introduced to experienced spinners DJ Mixdup and DJ Harlequin, who showed me more in just a few months, than I had learned since I first touched vinyl. These guys helped me produce my first demo CD- "Bangin Shit!" which was well received amongst the rave community, and introduced Spin-out to the scene.
Playing at a few parties here and there, it is still my goal to entertain the people with good quality mixing and performing energy that flows from the decks to the dancefloor on a regular basis.
To this day I am still working hard to find ways to improve my mixing and have begun to produce my own works. The first of which is a remix of Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback," which features a driving hard trance bassline with a darker styled melody. This project would not be completed if not for the engineering efforts of Weaver. This is the first of a number of production works lined up for the future.
I have also just completed my latest hardstyle and happy hard CD's: "Bangin Shit Volume 2: Evil Edition", and "Rave Machine: A journey from old to new." If you would like a copy of either of these discs, or wish to arrange a booking, contact me:
